UFC 259: Jan Blachowicz retains title, ends Israel Adesanya’s undefeated record and champ-champ hopes
Fellow fighters chime in on Jan Blachowicz defeating Israel Adesanya at UFC 259
Jan Blachowicz wanted respect put on his name, and ending Israel Adesanya’s undefeated MMA record and champ-champ hopes, as well as retaining the UFC light heavyweight championship in the main event of UFC 259, is a great way to go about doing that.
This marked Blachowicz’s first defense of the UFC light heavyweight title since winning the then-vacant belt at UFC 253, where he finished Dominick Reyes. He entered this championship contest on a four-fight win streak and eight wins in his last nine.
Adesanya was looking to become the fifth champ-champ in UFC history and the eighth UFC fighter to win championships in two different weight classes.
Entering this matchup undefeated in his MMA career, Adesanya had claimed middleweight gold by becoming interim champ in a war with Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236 and knocking out Robert Whittaker at UFC 243 to become undisputed champion. Adesanya retained the middleweight title at UFC 248 and UFC 253, defeating, respectively, Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa.
Jon Jones, other pros chime in on Israel Adesanya tasting defeat in MMA for first time
The first round was a quiet one, with Blachowicz trying to get a feel of Adesanya’s movements, but Blachowicz made him feel some Polish power in the second round. The two exchanged well in an even third round, but Blachowicz scored a takedown in the fourth, staying in top control for most of that frame — and he did the same in the fifth.
Jon Jones, the former UFC light heavyweight champion with who Adesanya has been in a heated rivalry and been clamoring for a fight against, took to Twitter to give his response to Adesanya’s performance and claim of “daring to be great.”
