Report: Canadian Sharpe drops out of NBA Slam Dunk Contest

Canadian rookie Shaedon Sharpe of the Portland Trail Blazers has dropped out of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest to focus on the second half of the season, The Athletic‘s Shams Charania reports.

The native of London, Ont., is averaging 7.5 points and 2.4 rebounds in 53 games this season.

Charania reports Jericho Sims of the New York Knicks will take Sharpe’s place. He’ll compete against K.J. Martin of the Houston Rockets, Trey Murphy of the New Orleans Pelicans and the G League’s Mac McClung

The Trail Blazers picked Sharpe seventh overall in this year’s NBA Draft.

Sharpe committed to Kentucky for university, but never ended up playing in the NCAA.

The slam dunk contest is Feb. 18 in Salt Lake City.
