Canada’s men’s national team will play a pair of CONCACAF final round games on home turf looking to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Canadian men’s squad, which recently reached the Gold Cup semifinals, is scheduled to take on Honduras (Sept. 2) and El Salvador (Sept. 8) at Toronto’s BMO Field in September, Canada Soccer announced Monday.

Both games are subject to Government of Canada authorization, and public health approvals from the City of Toronto and Province of Ontario are still pending to allow fans in attendance.

“We really want to sing that anthem at home in Canada with our fans, there’s no better sound in sport,” Canada Soccer’s men’s national team head coach John Herdman said in a media release.

“We’ve shown in recent times that we are ready to have a real push for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. With the fans behind us at home, it will bring us to another level.”

In between the home games, Canada will take on the U.S. on Sept. 5 in Nashville.

Canada has posted a 9-0-2 record this season, including eight straight victories, and reached the Gold Cup semis for the first time since 2007.

The team is also slated to face Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico and Panama over the coming months although dates and locations have yet to be announced.

Canada reached the CONCACAF final round of World Cup qualifiers for the first time since 1997 after coming out victorious in their first-round group against Aruba, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Suriname.

“The last qualification process in June was really important for this group of men to build a resilience and camaraderie in games where you knew if you slipped up, our FIFA World Cup dream would have been up in smoke,” Herdman said.

“That sort of pressure, the expectation, scrutiny and consequences has just hardened the group. With those moments, confidence has grown and in the Concacaf Gold Cup it continued to build.”
