Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Casey DeSmith had surgery to repair a core-muscle injury, the team announced on Thursday.

DeSmith will need six to eight weeks to recover from the procedure, which should have him ready in time for training camp.

The 29-year-old posted an 11-7-0 record in 20 games for the Penguins this season with a 2.54 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. The netminder missed the final two games of the regular season and was not available in Round 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs because of the injury.
