Super welterweights Sebastian Fundora and Jorge Cota went toe to toe for four rounds, but Fundora broke Cota down for the stoppage.

Super welterweights Sebastian Fundora and Jorge Cota gave boxing fans at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, something to cheer about. They went head to head for four wild rounds, but the action came to an early end to some of the fans’ displeasure.

Fundora and Cota met in a WBC super welterweight title eliminator on the undercard of the May 1 pay-per-view card between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Chris Arreola. The 23-year-old Fundora got the better of Cota as most expected, but the fight was a spectacle for all the right reasons until the end.

The 6-foot-5 Fundora looked huge compared to the 5-foot-11 Cota, but Cota surprised the southpaw Fundora by adopting his southpaw stance. It allowed Cota to land cleanly on Fundora in round 1, but he ate several Fundora hooks and uppercuts.

Sebastian Fundora took care of business against Jorge Cota. Who’s next?

As the fight progressed into rounds 3 and 4, Fundora started to break up Cota’s face with his powerful hooks and uppercuts. Fundora has developed into a power puncher in his last few fights, and he ripped a gash over Cota’s right eye.

In round 4, Fundora rocked Cota with a left hook to the head that wobbled Cota with a little over a minute remaining. Fundora continued to connect with his punches as Cota tried to land the homerun shot. Cota was willing to go out on his shield.

Cota fought back, but the referee stopped the fight with about 25 seconds remaining in the round. Cota was hurt, but he was still fighting and deserved more time. Regardless, it goes down as a KO for Fundora.

Fundora would love a shot at WBC champion Jermell Charlo, but Charlo is locked up for a full unification bout in July against Brian Castano. Fundora might be waiting since the winner of Charlo vs. Castano will have all the belts and many people vying for their attention.
